This website will give you information about my background and the services I provide as a King's Counsel

Between 1975 and 2022 I practiced law in New Zealand as a litigator, specializing in criminal law and human rights. From 2002, I was one of a small number of Queen’s Counsel working in these areas. Over the course of practicing law, I maintained an interest, as well, in constitutional law and international law.

In 2022 I embarked upon an extended sabbatical leave from the practice of law, so as to undertake research and writing on legal topics and some consultative work. The focus of the research is within the field of constitutional law.

The law plays a critical role in maintaining a free society and in containing abuse of power by the state. My work as a lawyer had been based on the belief that the law provides a means of challenging, where necessary, those who hold power, and in particular the misuse of that power. The research I am presently pursuing further develops that theme.
